Christmas Campaign dollars slow in coming this year
QUINCY, ILL. -- The Madonna House in Quincy faces uncertainty .
"We're worried for our future," said Barb Hicks, Executive Director of Madonna House in Quincy.
Even after two months of fund raising, the Madonna House is nearly ten thousand dollars behind its Christmas Campaign goal of $30 thousand. Those dollars are more vital than ever before. Last year money from the Christmas campaign was the only thing that got the charity through a year frought with low donations, state budget cuts and funding delays.
Even then the organization had to take out loans to meet payroll at the end of the year.
Now with Christmas campaign dollars not coming through, things aren't looking good for the non-profit that gives a new start to women and their children.
Hicks said, "The Madonna House is in dire straights, we're living check to check."
Executive Director Barb Hicks says the money is needed to keep the organization's food pantry and shelter open.
This food pantry served more than 800 people last year, almost three times more than normal. Due to the tough economy, many of them are people who used to support the Madonna House and now need help themselves.
With the increased need, the home is hoping the community will come through with donations this year.
