QUINCY, ILL. -- A reminder that the way you clear the snow on your property greatly impacts the safety of those around you.
Snow piled at the end of driveways or pushed across the road causes sight obstructions and can create icy areas.
This also makes it difficult for the plows to effectively and safely maneuver the roads.
Quincy City Engineer Jeff Stienkamp says, “Sometimes private contractors will plow parking lots and push the snow onto city property.” Stienkamp says this violates a city ordinance. He goes on to say, “it can be dangerous for that snow to be pushed into the roads.”
Stienkamp told KHQA he had to warned a half dozen private contractors today. If the snow gets piled along the road is could damage the snow plow and possibly injure the driver. Stienkamp recommends the contractors take up a parking space or two in the property to pile the snow.
In Quincy, there is no law requiring you to shovel your walks. But this winter weather will not stop letter carriers from making their appointed rounds. Quincy postmistress Peggy Beck asks residents to help mail carriers by clearing snow and ice from the sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes. Beck says, “This will help us maintain consistent delivery service.”
