Inmate assault incident sends one to hospital

FORT MADISON, IOWA -- An inmate is recovering from injuries sustained during an inmate assault incident on Friday, January 21, 2011.

Inmates 44-year-old David Alan Lenox and 23-year-old Christopher Langley were involved in the incident.

Langley was treated over the weekend initially at the Fort Madison Community Hospital then transported to University Hospitals in Iowa City and was returned to the Penitentiary on Sunday.

Langley sustained serious injuries but is recovering.

On January 21st at approximately 10:40 a.m. an alarm sounded indicating a possible assault involving two inmates in the Iowa Prison Industries building.

Both Lenox and Langley are serving life sentences for murder.  Lenox is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder from Grundy County.

The incident is currently under investigation by ISP Investigations Department.

The institution is currently locked down pending investigations.

You'll remember in November there was another incident at the Ft. Madison corrections center when four inmates were involved in a stabbing.

The four inmates involved at that time were Derek Smith who is serving a life sentence for Murder 1st , Heath Burgess  who is incarcerated for Sex Abuse 2nd/ Robbery 1st , Joshua George who is serving a life sentence for Murder 1st/Kidnap 2nd/Robbery 1st and Toby Michael  who is also serving a life sentence for Murder 1st .
