QUINCY, ILL. -- Four local athletes were recognized for what they've done *off* the field today.

The Quincy Exchange Club sponsors the Character Champions Sportsmanship Awards.

Austin Kestner of Camp Point Central, Jacob Ayers of Hamilton, Maverick McCarthy of Warsaw, and Brett Baker from Quincy Notre Dame were given awards.

The athletes attended a sportsmanship conference last September.

They brought what they learned back to their teams and were awarded for their teamwork and character.

"The overall aspect is to provide a greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect means that you're providing the right environment for good sportsmanship and good team building to occur," said Character Champions Chairman Jim Benz.

The next sportsmanship seminar is set for September 13.
