TRI-STATE AREA -- An article in USA Today shows donors trimmed back on giving to charity in 2010.

The Chronicle of PhilanthropyThe Chronicle of Philanthropy and Slate Magazine released the report, and it says Americans gave $3.3 billion dollars to charity.

That's the lowest amount since the year 2000.

To put that into a little bit of perspective, donations peaked in 2006 with more than 50 billion dollars.

We checked with some Tri-State charities, and found out here at home, we buck the national trend.

"I think there's a lot to be said for Midwestern values and how we give and the intentions we have. In the Midwest, I think people are more consistent with their giving because they want to be neighborly and help those in need," says Phillip Krupps with the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area.

Phillip Krupps is the Chairman of the Board with the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area.

He says the foundation had a consistent year in 2010, even though it was left a million dollar gift as part of a bequest.

You may also remember the Quincy Salvation Army surpassed its goal by several thousand dollars.

The United Way of Adams County plans to release its final amount raised next week.

Last week's blizzard shut down not only businesses, but the work of many non-profit organizations.

Now back in business, Douglass Community Services opened its doors for its monthly food distribution Tuesday. The center's Executive Director Dave Dexheimer says the food serves about 150 families during a typical distribution. He says many did not come Tuesday but will more than likely make the trip out this week.

As for the amount of food, Dexheimer says there's plenty for now. Food drives should start back up in May.
