The Mississippi River would act as a channel for shockwaves
This spring we might be sandbagging and finding sturdy doorways.
We know how to prepare for a flood, but Missouri is soon going to be learning how to survive an earthquake.
Marion County Emergency Management Director John Hark says it's impossible to predict when, but he says people need to know a large earthquake will hit the New Madrid or Santa Fe faults.
Either of those WILL affect us here in the Tri-States.
He says Hannibal and Marion County will be taking part in an eight state full scale exercise on earthquake preparedness in the next few months.
"Understand that we set on the Mississippi River and the Mississippi River is a natural tunnel if you would for shock waves to travel up. Shock waves cannot travel out across the country where it's pushing against stone or Mother Earth but so far, but water it travels it just like a direct channel," said Hark.
Hark says you need to be prepared for an earthquake.
He says its similar to any other disaster, make sure you have plenty of supplies, food, water and even some extra cash.
