SPRINGFIELD, ILL. -- Heroin use is on the rise in Springfield.

That's according to a report in the State Journal Register.

The Springfield police department says it has seen more overdoses on the drug because it has become more potent than it used to be.

Last year the department seized more than 300 grams of heroin with a street value of more 72 thousand dollars.

A Sangamon County deputy sheriff also reported that some meth users have switched to heroin in recent years.

He attributes that to the success of new laws making it harder for meth users to buy the pseudoephedrine needed to make the drug.
