QUINCY, ILL. -- UPDATED: Febuary 28 at 4:28 p.m.

A bad valve caused a chlorine leak at the Quincy Water Pollution Control Facility Sunday night.

About 115 pounds of gas leaked, but a strong north wind helped disburse the gas so it didn't pose any danger to the public.

Tri-Township and Quincy fire departments responded to the facility just after 11 p.m., and the spill was contained by 1 a.m.

A new cylinder has been installed.

Chlorine is used in the treatment of sewage and waste water.

Tri-Township and Quincy fire departments responded to the Quincy Water Polution Control Facility for a small chlorine leak from one of their tanks just after 11 p.m. Sunday night.

The chlorine is used in the treatment of sewage and waste water.

Adams County Emergency Management Director John Simon says that the leak was contained just before 1 a.m. Monday morning.

Fortunately because of a strong north wind the leak did not pose any sort of danger to the public.

The cause of the leak may not be known for some time.

The next step is for the tank to be sent back to the supplier.

Crews are on scene at the Quincy Water Polution Control Facility where there's a small chlorine leak from one of their tanks.

Tri-Township and Quincy fire departments responded after 11 p.m. Sunday night.

A hazardous materials truck arrived just before midnight.

They are still in assessment mode trying to figure out what exactly is going on.

Adams County Emergency Management Director John Simon says he doesn't think there's any danger to the public.

"I don't believe so. The wind direction and rain, it'll help compress those gases," said Simon. 

So far, there is no word as to what caused the leak.
