Fatal fire in Fort Madison

Ft. Madison Fire Chief Joey Herren says an autopsy was performed on Robert Rempe.

Herren says Rempe died of smoke inhulation sustained in the fire.

The fire remains under investigation.

One man is dead after a fire at a Fort Madison home Tuesday.  Crews were called to the home at 2726 Avenue J around 12:30 in the afternoon.

Heavy smoke was found pouring out of the front of the home.

Firefighters were able to enter the home, but trash in front of the door slowed them down.

Home owner Robert Rempe was found unresponsive by a bedroom door.

He was transported to Fort Madison Community Hospital where we was pronounced dead a short time later.

The cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is completed.  The autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

The home sustained heavy smoke and fire damage.

The cause remains under investigation.
