MACOMB, ILL. -- The Macomb Police Department is making strides into 21st technology as they're now able to receive anonymous crime tips via text messages.
MPD Chief Curt Barker says this feature ties into their crime reports website that posts real time incident reports about crimes that have been committed within the city limits.
The Crime Reports software tie all the information together and will be a benefit for the department and officers. And the chief said if someone does send a text message, it goes through several computer servers to make sure the identity of the person who is texting is kept confidential.
"They can use their cell phone and put in MPD tips into the message with the message they want to send us and text it to crimes. And if you do that, it will come to us because of that code word MPD tips," said Barker.
Also the way the software is setup, the person who is sending the text message will allows remain anonymous through the course of the conversation if that person and a Macomb police officer engage in a two way dialog.
