The six cabins located on Quinsippi Island need extreme restoration. Dating back to the Civil War, they've withheld centuries of wear and tear but now need new roofs and stability.

QUINCY, ILL. --

UPDATE April 7, 2011 9:30 a.m.

A property evaluator visits Quinsippi Island to put a cost on what it would take to repair and restore historic cabins on Quincy Park District land.

Joseph Gallagher of Boise, Idaho is touring the four buildings, a church, a corn crib and a stone smoke house to determine each structure's condition.

Gallagher will provide a detailed report including photographs and evaluation of the cost of repair.

The visit will cost at least $3,500, paid for by the volunteer group Friends of the Log Cabins.

Gallagher is retired from the National Park Service for which he repaired log buildings.

The Friends of the Log Cabins Association needs your help.

The six cabins located on Quinsippi Island need extreme restoration. Dating back to the Civil War, they've withheld centuries of wear and tear but now need new roofs and stability.

The association's president, John Gebhardt, says he's hired a historian contractor to see just how much the project would cost.  Without repairs, he's not sure how much longer they'll hold up.

"Once this is lost, it's gone forever. You can probably recreate a new village with new logs but it won't be the same," said Gebhardt.

Earlier bids from contractors: $60,000 to $100,000 per cabin, and that's just the structure. Altogether, that's about $600,000 the group doesn't have. That's why Gebhardt says any help, whether monetary or volunteer, would be greatly appreciated.
