QUINCY, ILL. -- Sharing the cost of crossing guards for the Quincy School District remains a hot topic for the school board. It held a special meeting Saturday top discuss the issue.
Recently, the city of Quincy notified the board it would no longer be able to foot the entire bill for all of its crossing guards. This came as a surprise to the board who hasn't set aside any of its budget for this.
The latest estimates range from anywhere from $100,000 to $125,000 a year. The city has asked the board to split the cost 50/50. Members say there's just not enough information to make a decision.
"I certainly think there are ways to handle this, but it's really too soon to speculate what those things would be. Thrown out there was some sort of volunteer system or perhaps having school employees take turns," said Tom Dickerson, the vice president of the school board.
Dickerson says currently, it's not a law or the city's obligation to pay for crossing guards, but when it comes to the safety of the students, it's not a matter to be dealt with lightly.
The historic house at 1440 Maine in Quincy now has new owners. The former school board building was sold at an auction during the board meeting Saturday for a grand total of $300,000.
It's new owners are Quincy native Sue Guetersloh and her fiance Ralph Canada from Texas. Together they plan to renovate the home back to its original look.
