KEOKUK, IOWA -- UPDATED: April 11 at 9:19 p.m.
The City of Keokuk has decided to allow for trash pickup in some of the city alley's beginning on May 2nd.
The alley pickups will be between 1st and 18th streets and from Orleans to Ridge Street.
Trash collections will only be on one side of the alley.
The alley pickups were discontinued back in February when the city discovered the garbage trucks were too heavy for some of the alleys.

Keokuk residents are looking at changing the way they use trash pick-up.
We're hearing from some residents on Facebook who are concerned that city crews will only pick up garbage in containers along street curbs rather than in alleys.
Phillip Engler said, "The City of Keokuk now requires ALL citizens to place their 95-gallon trash can in the street to get emptied. This will be a very big hassle for many residents who have steep hills, retaining walls, etc. I think they should go back to alley pick-up like they have done for YEARS!"
According to the Keokuk Daily Gate City, city crews stopped collecting garbage in containers in alleys after a 20-inch plus snowfall a few weeks ago. The Sanitation/Sewer Subcommittee decided to stick with it because many alleys are too soft and narrow for the garbage trucks. As a result, residents have had to put their 95-gallon containers and bins for recyclables along the curb in the street.

KHQA's Melissa Shriver talked to Keokuk's Mayor Tom Marion about resident's concerns Monday. He says no new ordinance regarding trash pick up has been passed. The only reason crews are not picking up trash in alleys is because the ground is too soft from snow and the Spring thaw.
We'll have more response on KHQA's evening news at six.
