QUINCY, ILL. -- Kansas City, Kansas may have beaten Quincy to become a Google City, but Mayor John Spring is still optimistic about Quincy's fiber future.
In October 2010, a company called i-3 installed high speed internet cables in the sewer system of one Quincy neighborhood.
Those were left in for 30 days as a trial period.
There were no reported problems with the i3 trial period.
The city council did voice some concerns to the company and that is where the process stands now.
Mayor Spring hopes this fiber optic project with i3 America will continue.
"I think we're still working with this group; it was kind of an offshoot, they discovered us through the Google application and we could possibly be the first city in the United States, since this is a European company. They are registered in Illinois for business, so that's a good thing," said Spring.
i-3 Group builds fiber optic networks using ready-made ducts like sewer systems to enable super-fast connectivity.
The company is working to lower the costs of delivering fiber-to-the-home for the residents, businesses and the community of Quincy.
The pilot project could be the first for i-3 America in the U.S. market.
