Essential Air Service funding on the federal chopping block
QUINCY, ILL. -- United States House and Senate members plan to debate cutting funding to more than 100 cities whose air service relies on essential air funding.
The plan was approved by the House last week.
Representatives approved a plan to eliminate EAS to commercial air service companies by October of 2013.
Senate members, including Senator Dick Durbin, oppose the plan.
It now heads to conference committee where Senate and House members will work on a compromise.
Quincy Mayor John Spring says eliminating EAS funding would be very detrimental to the area.
He says this comes at a time when local businesses are urging Cape Air to expand and provide service to Chicago.
U.S Rep. Aaron Schock, U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling and U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer all voted in favor of the bill to reauthorize funding for the FAA.
That bill included EAS cuts.
