A growing number of people in Illinois have ditched their landline telephones.

A new federal report says about 30 percent of adults living in or near Chicago and across the river from St. Louis are in wireless-only households.  That drops to about 22% of adults in the rest of Illinois.

Erica Ho with Techland.com says the lower a person's income the more likely they are to ditch the landline and go mobile.  She says cell phone plans and phones are generally becoming more affordable and prepaid plans also offer flexible alternatives.  Some states even offer subsidies to low-income earners which can be used towards wireless bills.

We're going to talk to a local cell phone provider and see what information they have on this trend.
