Less than a year old, a new Quincy business is already drawing history buffs and bargain hunters to its door. QUINCY, ILL. --
Hanlin's Auction service specializes in consignment and estate auctions.
In this It's Your Business Report, Stephen Johnson shows us how the business is quickly turning into a place where people can not only get a good deal on some practical items, but also get their hands on a piece of local history.
Owner Chris Hanlin says, " I'm surprised almost on a weekly basis of the, just the neat stuff, for lack of a better term, the absolutely neat stuff, that is in people's homes in the city of Quincy and the surrounding area."
Since September of last year his business Hanlin Auction service located at 812 Hampshire, in part of the old Tony's restaurant building has been finding and selling unique treasures from homes around the area.
Like any other auction service the supply of available items turns over pretty quickly but the week I was there I spotted some great things like a set of dishware, old pocket knives and an interesting collection of clocks and old Illinois license plates.
Of course you can usually find great pieces of old furniture and even a steamer trunk like this one pops up from time to time.
Hanlin and his wife say that it's always surprising the kinds of things they end up finding in people's attics.
But some of the most interesting things that Chris runs across have to do with the history of Quincy and the surrounding area.
For instance he has a price list from the old Dick Brothers brewery and a beer case from the Ruff-Riedell brewery.
Chris says that many people accidentally throw away valuable treasures without realizing it.
He says, " Everytime, without fail that I've gone to a house or a farm house that has a burn pile or dumpster or there is already stuff in trash bags, almost every time I'll pull hundreds of dollars in auction dollars out of the trash that people have thrown away."
Hanlin's has an auction every Thursday starting at 4pm.
