Tuesday night, the Adams County Board approved an ordinance that establishes the cost for those licenses.

It will cost $22 for a civil union license in Adams County, which is the same amount for a marriage license.

The discussion became heated Tuesday on our Facebook page.

Carol N Claude Dolbeare commented, "Gays are people just like the rest of us. They pay taxes just like the rest of us! Of course they should have the same laws as us! I don't see a problem at all with the it!"

On the other end of the spectrum, Lisa Hughlett Hemphill said, "dont think its right."

Illinois became the 6th state to allow civil unions after Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill into law.

Both same-sex couples and heterosexual couples are allowed to receive a civil union.  The law grants many rights similar to marriage, including the right to decide on medical treatment for partners and the right to inherit property.

The law will take effect June 1, and civil union licenses will be issued on that day.

Tuesday night the Adams County Board will look at an ordinance to set the cost of the licenses.

We will talk to County Clerk Georgia Volm Tuesday about the specifics of civil unions, so check this story later and be sure to watch KHQA's News at Five, KHQA's Evening News at 6 and KHQA's Late News at 10.
