Memorial Day is a time when we kick back, fire up the grill, head to the beach, and jump-start our summer fun. But, the holiday is more than just backyard BBQ’s. It’s a time to remember those who gave their life to fight for freedom.
The day, which was originally called Decoration Day, officially became a holiday in 1868. It was a day set aside to honor the fallen soldiers from the Civil War. According to usamemorialday.org, flowers were placed on the graves of union and confederate soldiers on May 30th at Arlington National Cemetery. However, the South refused to recognize the holiday until after World War I, when the holiday expanded to recognize fallen heroes from all wars.
In 2000, the “National Moment of Remembrance” was passed, that asks all Americans to pause for a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. each year on Memorial Day in honor of those who died while fighting for freedom.
Sunday, KHQA will bring you information about how people in the Tri-States are honoring our heroes.
