The home of the Unsinkable Molly Brown reopened to the public this weekend after being closed for repairs.  The exterior steps and railing was damaged after a car ran into it earlier this summer.

The home had just reopened earlier this summer after being closed more than a year due to mold problems.

It's open every weekend through the end of the month.

The home of the Unsinkable Molly Brown is finally back above water.

Hundreds of volunteer hours later...it opened up to tourists Saturday for the first time in more than a year.

Just a couple of months ago things weren't looking good for the birthplace of the unsinkable Molly Brown. After being in the possession of the Hannibal Convention and Visitor's Bureau a couple of years, it was closed last summer when a drainage problem flooded the home. It sat empty and neglected all summer. That's when mold took over the house, covering everything from the walls to period antiques that are displayed here.

After the former owners of the home brought their concerns to the city council, council members stepped in. They took oversight of the home from the Hannibal Convention and Visitor's Bureau and allocated money and city crews to make repairs to the site.

All that work has paid off, with a tourist site that you would never know was covered with mold just 2 months ago.

Councilman Lou Barta was on hand for the opening day Saturday. He says this is not only a piece of history to be treasured, it's an important piece in the area's tourism industry.

So like the home's namesake, it appears this home is a true survivor after all.

City crews did most of the work to get the home ship-shape.

The home is the last of the city's Irish shanty town, which was located on the hills on Hannibal's east side.  Brown's home was built in the 1830's.
