ADAIR CO, MO -- The Adair County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the apparent accidental death of an 11-month-old Amish infant that happened just before 11 p.m. Sunday.

The baby’s family was traveling home in a horse-drawn carriage when the accident occurred.  It appears that the infant slipped from the lap of a family member who had fallen asleep while the carriage was in motion on Redtail Hawk Lane, a gravel road just outside Gibbs.

The Adair County Ambulance District responded to the scene, and emergency responders performed CPR on the baby.  The infant was transported to Northeast Regional Medical Center where the child was pronounced dead.

At the time of the incident, the child displayed injuries that were indicative of a fall.  There were no signs of abuse.  Adair County Coroner Brian Noe has ordered an autopsy.

The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate this incident as an accidental death while awaiting autopsy results.
