QUINCY, ILL. -- The Quincy School District is once again making sure children have the chance to eat a nutritious lunch over the summer just like they do during the school year. And there are other school districts across the Tri-State area that are also serving up breakfast and lunch over the summer.

The Quincy Public School District wants to make sure kids aren't going hungry this summer.

That's why they're serving up breakfast and lunch at Washington and Berrian Elementary Schools.

The staff will be serving up nutritious meals from now until August 12th. From 7:30 am to 9:30 am for breakfast and from 10:30 to 1:00 for lunch.

Jean Kinder is the director for food service for the the Quincy Public School District and she said, "a lot of kids depend on this program. This program has been going on for a long time and so when school is out and a lot of parents qualified for free or reduced meals during the school year. But then summer comes and they'll have this big financial burden of feeding kids they weren't use to during the school year."

The meals are free for anyone 18 and under. And when an adult brings in the kids for the summer meal program it costs them a dollar for breakfast and two bucks for lunch. It's something Kinder says is appreciated by families all across town.

"I think parents love this program. They support this program. We have different groups of individuals that come down. It's really convenient and easy for them to do," said Kinder

The district says last year they served 28,000 meals for breakfast and lunch combined and this year they say they'll average about 300 lunches a day. Funding for the summer lunch program comes from the federal government.

Meanwhile this is what other districts are doing in the Tri-State area.

In Hannibal, their summer lunch program runs from June 6, 2011 to July 1, 2011.

Breakfast and lunch is available at each elementary school as well as the Hannibal Middle School.

At the elementary schools, breakfast goes from 7:30 to 8:30 and lunch from 11:00 to 12:00.

At the middle school, breakfast is from 7:15 to 8:15 and lunch from 11:00 to 12:00.

There is no cost for anyone 18 and younger. But for an adult who is accompanying a child, the cost is $2.00.

In Keokuk, they're offering a summer lunch program for students as well.

The program runs from June 2, 2011 to August 5, 2011. Lunch will be available from 11:00 to 12:00 at the Keokuk Middle School cafeteria.Children up to age 18 are eligible to receive a free meal. While adults who are with the children are asked to pay $3.00 per meal.

Food must be kept in the cafeteria and there are no exceptions for food to be taken from the building.

And in Macomb, they'll begin their summer lunch program on June 6th and it will go until July 1, 2011. Breakfast is from 7:30 to 9:00 and lunch goes from 11:00 to 1:00. The program is serving lunch and breakfast at Lincoln School. There is no cost for the meals.
