You may have noticed a few more businesses in Quincy's downtown area.

If you have, you're right.

Six new businesses have opened in the last year.

That's new business fronts only, meaning if a business opened in an existing building like the WCU building, it doesn't count.

Even better news, there's room to for more new businesses.

Travis Brown, director of the Historic Quincy Business District says, "We still have 74 vacancies.  That's less than one a block now.  Unfortunately, when people drive by they see two or three empty businesses and they think that's indicative of what's really going on downtown.  When you stop and look at everything, we have 75 square blocks and 74 vacancies.  We think we're doing pretty well."

Travis Brown also says having a thriving downtown area helps recruit for other aspects of the city.

For example, physician recruiters like to be able to show off a successful downtown to prospective doctors.
