QUINCY, ILL. -- According to American Pet Products Association, 62% of the U.S. households own a pet.

And taking care of that member of the family can sometimes get expensive.

Medical costs at the vet's office can range from $900 bucks to treat brain cancer in a dog ... to $2,800 to treat intervertebral disk disease in the canine.

Now when it comes to felines, you can expect a cost of around $1,600 to treat the condition known as foreign body ingestion ... or it could cost you $500 to $600 to treat your cat for acute renal failure.

The medical costs add up and now some people are buying health insurance for their pets.

We're going to talk with a local vet about health insurance for your pet and we're also going to visit with someone who decided to go ahead and buy the health insurance plan for their dog.

KHQA's Jim Whitfield will bring you more details, so check this story later and watch KHQA's News at Five, KHQA's Evening News at 6 p.m. and KHQA's Late News at 10 p.m.

Tell us what you think about health insurance for your pet.  A good idea? A bad idea? Would you buy?

We would love to hear what you think below or on our Facebook page here!

The discussion is getting heated on Facebook ... by 10 a.m. we had 8 no's and one of them was a "heck no."  On the other hand, one reader says she wishes she had pet insurance ... weigh in on this conversation now!
