FORT MADISON, IOWA -- Drivers, gt ready to slow down coming into Fort Madison. If a speed limit ordinance is approved, your speed will be reduced by 10 miles per hour in three areas of town.

If the city council approves the next two readings of a proposed ordinance, signs would be placed on 15th Street, 18th Street and on 48th Street, between Avenue J and Bluff Road. Currently, sections of those road are still marked 35 and 45 mph, which is a no-go leading into residential areas.

"The residents in that area, I think will be a little more satisfied. Knowing that sign is there and it's going to remind people to slow down," said Police Chief Bruce Niggemeyer.

More than anything these changes will be made to keep the city's code section up to date, but Niggemeyer says one location could become a potential problem if not fixed.

"The one on 48th Street between Bluff Road to Ave J is currently a 45 mile area zone. Well, the new 4-8 school is going in, and they're building it as we speak.I thought it was more appropriate to have a 35 mph zone instead of 45, since there will be students out there in the future."

How fast do you travel on these stretches of road?  Do you think people drive too fast within the city limits?  Leave your comments below.
