Iowa budget talks down to the wire

DES MOINES, IOWA -- Gov. Terry Branstad is blaming Democrats for protracted budget negotiations, saying they haven't adjusted to the reality that Republicans control the House and governor's office.

In an interview Thursday with The Associated Press, Branstad singled out Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal for criticism.

Branstad says that for years Gronstal has had his way at the Statehouse, but he now must adapt to the new reality.

Branstad says he was elected to make tough financial choices, and he will force Democrats to go along, no matter how long it takes.

Gronstal rejects the claim, saying he has repeatedly sought compromises with Republicans.

The Legislature is still struggling to approve a budget before the June 30 end of the fiscal year.
