When someone is lost or drowns in the Mississippi River, the Quincy Volunteer Emergency Corps responds.　

It’s a group of more than 50 local men and women who patrol and drag the river alongside law enforcement and emergency responders to locate or recover missing victims.　

Recently Quincy resident George Schmitt went missing after a fishing trip on the river.　 After two weeks responders gave up the search, but the Quincy Volunteer Emergency Corp members kept their patrols.　 On one of those searches, members recovered Schmitt’s body for his family.

But these searches take money.　 During river searches, more than a thousand dollars worth of fuel is burned daily when dragging the river.　 The Quincy Volunteers Emergency Corps operates almost completely off of donations and volunteers' time and fuel.　Although it serves the entire community, it receives only $2 thousand dollars from the city of Quincy.　 That’s why this fundraiser is so important.

The Quincy Volunteer Emergency Corps is holding a fundraiser Sunday, July 24 at Stubbs Tavern at 1517 North 3rd in Quincy. The fundraiser is being held at Stubbs in memory of George Schmitt.　 Schmitt enjoyed spending time at that bar with his friends and family.　 His presence has been missed there since his passing.　 Organizers say people who knew him will turn out to support the organization that brought him home.

The event begins at noon, with a live auction kicking off at 1p.m.　 There will be live music, food and a kiddie corner for the kids.

Items up for auction include a 32-inch flat screen television, two-horse twin tank air compressor, and a two-day youth hunt.　 Also included in festivities will be raffles for a Remington 1187 gun, a $500 raffle with limited chances and a 50/50 drawing.
