PIKE COUNTY, ILL. -- The Pike County, Illinois Sheriff's Department is on the scene of a car fire.

Smoke poured from under the hood of the small white Honda at the overpass near the I-172 exit for Hannibal.

No one was in the car at the time of the fire.

A semi truck driver and a delivery truck driver both pulled over at the scene and attempted to help before crews arrived, one of the drivers got out a portable fire extinguisher.  It was to no avail ... the white smoke soon turned more serious and flames began to drip from below the engine.

It didn't take long for the flames to build and for the people to back away.

As flames rose from the car three loud flare ups were heard ... almost small explosions.

KHQA does not know at this time if the fire was due to hot weather conditions.

We will bring you more details as they are released so make sure to watch KHQA's News at Five, Evening News at Six and Late News at Ten.
