KEOKUK, IOWA -- If you see all kinds of airplanes in the sky this weekend flying around the Keokuk Municipal airport, it's the 21st annual L-Birds convention.

L-Birds are single engine Cessnas and other planes that the U.S. military has used as scout planes since World War II.

A scout plane flies through the sky alone and identifies enemy troop locations and locations for artiliery strikes.

Many of the planes weren't shot at during battle because the enemy did not view them as hostile since they were single engine planes and were not attemping to fire at troops on the ground.

The event at the Keokuk airport runs through Saturday and the public is welcome.

Plane rides are available to the general public.

About 20 planes are expected to be at the airport.
