CANTON, MO. -- Culver-Stockton College has something to be proud of.
It is recognized by the Corporation for National and Community Services as a leader among higher education institutions for its Extreme Dome Makeover.
It is one of many service projects students partake in.
The school exemplifies volunteerism, service-learning, and civic engagement.
President Richard Valentine says this award means a lot to him, the college, and the community of Canton.
"One of the major visionary ideas that I had when I came here was to involve students in helping others. I think that's the only way we're going to affect change," says Valentine.
The college also recently found out that it is nominated for next years award as well.
The school also has chosen who will receive the Extreme Dome Makeovers this year.
Four Canton families will receive free exterior home renovations by Culver-Stockton students.
This year's recipients are
Bobby and Connie Brundza, Kim and Sharon Lambert, Dan and Carla Steinbeck, and Sharon Slater.
Valentine says, "Just as soon as our students are back on campus we'll be organizing, we go right back into the community. It's a one day service day and we'll have lots and lots of activity. But, as you can imagine, it's quite an operation to organize and to keep the students busy. Once they're done with one project, they're off to the next."
Last year was the first year for the makeovers.
Almost 400 volunteers came out.
This years Extreme Dome Makeover will be August 20th.
