KEOKUK, IOWA -- Students in several Keokuk schools began the new school year amid construction projects.

Students at Keokuk High School, Hawthorne Elementary and George Washington Elementary are sharing space with contractors finishing up school improvement projects.

Construction projects include installation of heat pumps, air-conditioning, media center upgrades and classroom additions.

Masonry and roof work is ongoing at the high school and a geothermal heating system will be installed.

A 6,700-square-foot classroom addition at Hawthorne is slated for completion by the third week of January 2012.

The projects total approximately $10 million and are funded by a one-cent sales tax.
