HANNIBAL, MO. -- It's been almost two weeks since fire destroyed the building that housed Grand View Nursery south of Hannibal.
But because of one simple step the office staff did every night before they went home, the business has been able to continue to operate without missing a beat.
Nursery general manager Vince Howald sits in his temporary office just a few feet from where the building use to be.
In fact, there's still smoke and fire that can be seen on the debris pile from the fire that ripped through the building on August 20th.
"Our secretary Stacy does a backup on a jump drive every night and usually she or I take it home with us. So it's vital for any business to have a backup of their day's transactions," said Howald.
Although they were able to keep their transactions safe, they got a visit from the Missouri DNR about whether or not there was asbestos on the site.
Howald says it's going to take about two weeks for test results to come back and once they get the answer they'll be able to proceed with the rebuilding on the current site.
"We've talked with some contractors and we're just waiting for DNR to let us know the test results. Once that comes back we'll be able to get this site cleared pretty fast," said Howald.
So for now, Howald and the rest of the staff at Grand View Nursery want to make sure they're taking care of their customers just like they did before the fire. Everything from customer service, to repair, to sales.
