For our Facebook Story of the Day for September 16, we're talking about an option for those in line to lose their homes.
SPRINGFIELD, IL -- Illinois families on the brink of losing their homes may be able to get help from a program called "Illinois Hardest Hit."
This is the story you voted for our Facebook Story of the Day.
The program will use $345 million from the federal government to offer zero-interest loans to about 15,000 families having trouble paying their mortgage.
Participants can get up to $25,000 in aid over 18 months.
The money comes in the form of a 10-year loan. Participants who follow the rules for five years can have the entire debt erased.
To qualify, a family must have suffered a 25% drop in income because of unemployment or under-employment, with income slightly higher than the area average.
The Illinois unemployment hit 9.9% last month. Gov. Pat Quinn said Thursday the program can help both families and communities.
