QUINCY, ILL. -- It's that time of the year for flu shots, but for many of your kids that's more frightening than the upcoming holiday.
Sunday, the Blessing-Reiman College of Nursing teamed up with John Wood Community College students to help ease those fears for the little ones. Kids were invited to the annual Teddy Bear Clinic. Whether they brought their own stuffed animal or used one on site, each kid had the chance to give a shot to their furry friend and make it all better with a band aid.
"We want to get children used to shots. I know it's not the most pleasant thing, so this helps us get the children aware of the fact that it doesn't hurt that bad. It gets them used to it," said Jessica Ferguson, this year's Teddy Bear Clinic chairman.
Across town, the real flu shots were given out on the John Wood campus. Close to a thousand people were expected to get their shots Sunday. For many adults, it was a simple drive through, where Adams County Health Department staff were on hand to administer the shots.
"We like to give this as an alternative to a standard walk-in flu clinic. I think there's a convenience factor for some people and a novelty factor for others. It's just a venue that's fun and convenient for people to do," said Clinical Services Director Jerrod Welch.
For the kids who were still a bit unsure, they could walk in next door and meet the staff beforehand.
The health department reports that they had 500 vaccinations in total on the 2nd.
