The chairman of the John Wood Community College Board of Trustees says he was not aware former JWCC President Tom Klincar had positioned himself for a new job when trustees agreed to accept his resignation and give him a severance package valued at about $185,000. That's according to an interview with our news gathering partners at WTAD.
Dr. Gary Carter said the Trustee’s Executive Committee had written Klincar a letter of recommendation as part of his severance agreement, but that was done with no knowledge Klincar was up for the chancellor’s job at Central Texas College.
“We knew he had applied for the job in St. Louis in April,” Carter said, referring to Klincar being a finalist for a position with the St. Louis Community College system. “But no, we didn’t know he was actively searching.”
Carter said there was no provision in the severance agreement that called for it to be voided if Klincar took on a new job.
“Had we known what was coming, I think we would have tried to put that in,” Carter said. “I wish I had had more information. You always wish you had more information when you make a decision. You try to make decisions in good faith. In this case, I didn’t and I have to live with it…Every experience you have is a learning experience. It’s part of life’s trials.”
