SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- The fall veto session kicked off this week at the Illinois Capitol with fireworks between the governor and lawmakers of both parties.
Illinois lawmakers have taken the first steps toward restoring salaries for the state's regional superintendents, cut by Governor Pat Quinn earlier this year.
A House committee approved legislation to take the salaries out of a special tax fund for local government.
Now the full House will consider the plan.
Sparks and words are flying, as House democrats turn on their democratic governor for his promise last year to not cut any jobs or close any state facilities in exchange for concessions from state unions.
Quinn is now moving to break that agreement by cutting nearly 2,000 jobs and threatening to close prisons and other state institutions.
But Quinn blames legislators, saying they did not give him enough money to run state government for a full year without making cuts.
