NORTHEASTERN UNITED STATES -- For New England, Halloween brought far more tricks than treats. A freak, early “winter” storm had a major impact.
Slick roads and nasty weather conditions are to blame for 13 deaths throughout the northeastern part of the country. Over a million-and-a-half people still do not have power because of downed power lines and tree limbs. Roads are barricaded to keep people away from these damaged trees and power lines. Many schools are still closed.
The heavy snowfall was extraordinary enough to be record-setting. The National Weather Service confirmed that the western Massachusetts town of Peru received 32 inches of snowfall!
The heavy, wet nature of all this snow allowed it to easily cling to trees and utilities. It certainly doesn’t help that trees still have their leaves this early in the season. The leaves provide more surface area for the hefty snow to stick to.
With the large scope of the storm’s effects, it will likely be several more days before power is restored to everyone in states like New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
We had several Facebook friends tell us that they had connections to the Northeast.
Heather Renee Kindhart Ramos posted, "My aunt lives in Pennsylvania. In the mountin and they are about 2 feet... "
BettyJo Gonnerman told us, "My youngest son lives just outside Newark, NJ.( Actually in Kearny) he emailed a bunch of photos over the week-end. It is mostly melted there but the strange part was that the trees had not changed yet. I thought they changed color in Sept and Oct. I guess not."
