PITTSFIELD, ILL. -- Veteran's Day is fast approaching. Here's a way that you can make November 11th a special day for all of our past and present service men and women.
The Pike County, Illinois Chamber of Commerce is distributing seven thousand postcards free of charge, aside from postage, to anyone in the Tri-States wishing to send a message of thanks to someone in the military.
"Of all the projects we do, this is really the most rewarding for us. Because it touches so many people, thousands of people, not just the people who receive the cards, but also the people that send them," said Kaye Iftner, the chamber's executive director.
This is the second year an anonymous donor has designed and purchased the cards. This year's theme is Symbols of Freedom.
If you'd like to send a card, but don't know a service member personally, the chamber will help you find one.
"We have a list of veteran's names through our local American Legion, as well as some of the adjoining towns. This is a county-wide program, so we have a pretty good list of veteran names, and in terms of people actively serving it's not that hard to find those folks. We have a lot of people here in Pike County who are currently serving," said Iftner.
If you'd like to send a veteran or service member a postcard, all you have to do is pick a card up at various locations within Pike County, add a stamp and personal message and send it in the mail.
Postcard locations: post offices, banks, churches, senior centers, Pike County Sheriff's Office, the courthouse, city and village offices, the WBBA radio station, and the chamber office in Pittsfield.
