Deer are in the spotlight - or headlights- in Iowa this month.

November in Iowa has the highest rate of vehicle-deer collisions. Joe Wilkinson of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says there are three main reasons. It's the rutting season...The harvest is almost complete and deer have lost a primary hiding spot in corn fields.

Daylight hours are growing shorter, which means dawn and dusk, when deer are most active, closely coincide when people are heading to and from work.

The deer road kill count in Iowa in 2010 was about 10,000, a fourth of which occurred in November.
