MIDWEST -- A strong storm delivered snow to eastern Nebraska and western Iowa on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. It’s the first snowfall of the season for these areas – and much too close to us for comfort!
Much of central and northern Iowa woke-up to 2 to 4 inches of snow. The official National Weather Service observation from the airport in Des Moines was 3.7 inches!
The average date of the first one-inch-or-greater snowfall in Des Moines is December 1st. The average time frame for the first 3-to-4-inch snow like the one just received is late December to early January, so even for Des Moines, this was an out-of-the-ordinary snow. It ranks as the fifth highest snowfall amount produced by a single storm so early in the season.
Flurries and snow showers made it into some counties in southeastern Iowa early Wednesday morning, but no accumulation occurred this far south. Emily Hardman in Kahoka, Missouri took video of the light snow, and you can view it on our KHQA Facebook page! Did you see any snowflakes Wednesday morning?
