QUINCY, ILL. -- Shoplifting is on the rise in Quincy.

Although numbers went up and down this year, overall shoplifting numbers are up 30 percent from last year in Quincy as of November first.

Experts say normally an increase in shoplifting is a sign of troubled economic times.

The Hannibal Police Department is addressing the shoplifting problem there by posting signs in local businesses. Click here to read that story.

Lieutenant John Zerbonia with the Hannibal Police Department says the approaching holidays can mean an increase in shoplifting.

Shoplifting is also up eleven percent nationally, but according to the National Retail Federation most of the losses to retailers came employee thefts.
