QUINCY, ILL. -- UPDATED: November 28 at 11:10 a.m.
Heavy rain and cooler temperatures didn't keep shoppers away from the first every Small Business Saturday in Quincy.
Several businesses offered discounts using these coupons you could print off the Historic Business District's website to lure shoppers downtown.
Travis Brown with the Historic Quincy Business District says he hasn't heard from all the businesses that took part in the shopping day that highlights small business, but from what he has heard, it was successful.
Travis Brown says, "Really that there was a lot of people. Everybody was coming down supporting the small businesses. One business said they had over 90 shoppers, which for a Saturday is phenomenal. They also say the vast majority were carrying their coupon sheet and they did end up making a purchase."
Travis Brown says some of the retailers have agreed to honor the coupons into December, so he invites everyone to come on out and shop.
With the rush of Black Friday over, shoppers get a chance to help local businesses for Small Business Saturday.
Many shoppers get up early to wait in long lines for discounted merchandise.
But Saturday, shoppers could sleep in and still get a bargain.
The grey skies didn't keep shoppers away from Small Business Saturday.
Celia Neff, Owner of Celia's Gift's and More says, "We had people at the door when we opened up and that was a wonderful feeling. We really appreciate people who want to come downtown and support the local businesses."
Small Business Saturday is a national movement to promote shopping at local businesses. What shopping local means for Quincy is that more of the money you spend will go back into the local economy.
Neff says "Just shopping downtown really supports all the local businesses that are here downtown and we really enjoy the support that we get."
The day is also about offering customers a more personalized shopping experience.
Shopper Alyssa Burns says, "These stores have a lot more to offer as far as specialty gifts. They're a lot more thoughtful and unique rather than just going to Walmart where you get the same things over and over. The owners of these stores are more aware of what their products are and they can point out things that you're looking for."
