Iowa officials say an estimated 5-to 6,000 gallons of untreated sewage has been spilled into the Mississippi River at Keokuk.

Officials blamed Monday's spill on a pump malfunction at a lift station on the north side of Keokuk.

A starter on one pump had burned out, and the circuit breaker had tripped on another pump there.

The circuit breaker has been reset, which let officials pump the sewage back to the plant for treatment.

Repairs are being made on the other pump.
