HANNIBAL, MO. -- After receiving an anonymous tip, the Hannibal Police Department arrested 25-year-old Cherie N. Wharton of Hannibal on charges of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

At approximately 10:45 p.m. Friday, someone anonymously reported that a 1-year-old child was left alone, locked in a bedroom of an apartment in the 200 block of Munger Lane.

Officers arrived on scene and when no one responded, they entered the apartment to hear a small child crying from a locked bedroom.

They found a 1-year-old baby boy alone in a play pen. No other occupants were found in the home.

The child was taken into child protective custody and released to the Department of Family Services who was called to the scene.

After an investigation, HPD located the Wharton in a downtown Hannibal business where she was arrested and placed on a 24 hour hold at the Marion County Jail.
