SCHUYLER COUNTY, MO. -- A former northeast Missouri county collector has pleaded guilty to a federal charge alleging she embezzled about $550,000 in taxpayer money.

The U.S. Attorney's office in St. Louis says 51-year-old Kathy Sue Roberts, of Downing, pleaded guilty Monday to one felony count of mail fraud.

Roberts, of Downing, served as the elected collector for Schuyler (SKEYE'-lur) County from 1987 until August of this year.

Prosecutors said that from 1992 until she left office, Roberts received cash payments for county taxes and kept some of the funds for her personal use. Residents who paid the stolen taxes were given receipts, and Roberts made sure they never received delinquent tax notices.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 22, 2012. Roberts faces a maximum 20 years in prison along with fines.
