ILLINOIS -- A new law goes into effect in Illinois on January 1st which will allow motorcyclists stopped at a red light to proceed through the light if the red light fails to change to green after a reasonable amount of time.

The bill was passed after a lobbyist for a motorcycle advocacy group testified that bikers sometimes get stuck at a red lights timed to change to green only when sensors detect a vehicle.

Motorcycles don't always weigh enough to trigger the signal.

Governor Pat Quinn said the bill endangered motorists and the interpretation of the "reasonable amount of time" language could vary from person to person and from county to county. He tried to veto a change in that language, but both the House and Senate overrode his changes and the bill was passed with the original language.

Do you think the law could be misinterpreted? Post your thoughts on this Facebook Story of the Day directly to our Facebook page here.
