HANNIBAL, MO. -- Crime is on its way down in Hannibal.
According to the Hannibal Courier Post, Police Chief Lyndell Davis says numbers are down at least 30 percent on all crimes from homicide to property damage.
The biggest drops are in misdemeanor theft and assaults.
But even with crime dropping, calls to police increased by 52 percent.
Officials attribute the numbers to an improved perception of the department and proactive officers on patrol.
"I think it's a combination of things. I think you see this nationwide because of statistics I've heard from the U.S. Department of Justice that you see a decline in pretty much all through the United States. But here locally we've seen a considerable decline and I think it's a combination of all those things that we're doing as well as just changing society and I hope it's a trend that stays," said Davis
