(AP) -- Missouri school teachers may lose their tenure permanently in the coming year.

A proposed amendment to the state constitution would bar tenure permanently and require schools to focus on a teacher's performance rather than seniority when it comes to layoffs.

This amendment could be decided by voters this November if supporters gather 160 thousand signatures from supporters.

The Missouri State Teachers Association (MSTA) responded to the proposed amendment online in a press release stating, "MSTA opposes this petition and any attempt to eliminate teacher tenure. Teachers play a vital role in educating students and must be protected from arbitrary terminations to do their jobs properly."

MSTA provides frequently asked questions regarding the Missouri Teacher Tenure Act here.
