QUINCY, ILL. --
Today is the 100th day of school and students at St. Francis School in Quincy are celebrating by giving back to the community.

Students there are doing their part to to stock the St. Francis food pantry.

St. Francis School worked in collaboration with two local Girl Scout troops on the 100th Day of School Food Drive.

All week, classes collected items such as toilet paper, rolls of paper towels, cans of soup, vegetables and pounds of sugar.

Each class was assigned one non-perishable food item with the objective collect 100 of each to reach a goal of 900 items or more.

Their 900 item goal was modest, the school reached and surpassed it with ease.  Some classes brought in more than their fair share.

Jordan Meyer is an eighth grader at St. Francis School and a local Girl Scout. She and her fellow troop members came up with the idea for the food drive.

"I was really impressed by how much people brought in and everything. Our food pantry needed it, so it was really good" Jordan said.  "It looks like we passed our goal, way past our goal."
St. Francis food pantry volunteers said they have noticed an increase need throughout the community and events like the 100th Day of School Food Drive is exactly what it needs to meet the growing demands.

If you would like to donate to the St. Francis food pantry, you can drop off toiletries and non-perishable food item at St. Francis Solanus School, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1720 College Ave.
