BARRY, ILL. -- The New Philadelphia historic site near Barry will be seeing development in the coming years thanks to a big financial pledge.
New Philadelphia is the first community founded by an African-American, Free Frank McWorter.
According to the Quincy Herald Whig, the Illinois Rural Electric Cooperative pledged $75 hundred dollars each year for 10 years to develop physical structures and improvements at the historic site.
In the past, the New Philadelphia site has only been a farm field with some non-original cabins
But officials with the site say this pledge will allow construction of a visitor's kiosk and the beginnings of a walking trail in place by June.
The co-op's donation will also include in-kind labor from the John Wood Community College construction trades program.
